Recently in North Western sumatra there was an Earthquake measuring 7.9 on the richtor scale which struck Padang (Port for the mentawais). Many families were affected by these earthquakes and many homes destroyed. Sumatra is a massive island and although the quake was felt in the south sumatra area it was too weak to cause any damage at all. All infrastructure in the southern region is unnaffected.

In other news from the area. Local American Andy Watson who runs The Karang Hotel is reported to be in hospital after a run in with some local youths, They apparently confronted him at his property at jenny's (2 hours north of Ujung Bocur). Andy has had a reputaton in recent times of causing trouble with locals and this is probably the repercussions of his attitude towards the locals.
