Sumatra Surf Reports at www.magicseaweed.com

Karang Nyimbor
- Drew's Right - Jimmy's Point

Sumatra Surf Link's accommodation puts you right on the doorstep of some of Sumatra's most consistent breaks, while having more than a dozen other breaks within short driving distance.

Camp Karang / Ombak Indah / Family losmen

Karang NyimborSituated right on your doorstep (the camp over looks the wave) - this long left hander is one of the best and most consistent waves in the whole of South Sumatra, if not in Indonesia.

Breaking for a good 200 meters, this wave offers a wealth of sections for every surfer.
The furthest outside corner produces the heaviest section, where a decent barrel can be had. Beyond this section is 100 meters of fun feathering lips, ideal for practicing various top turns and round houses. The end section will offer a closeout - that isn't sketchy in the slightest. But often by then, most surfers have pulled off the wave (from fatigue!). The wave breaks on all tides and is shallower and hollower at low tide.

Swell & consistency

It's a year round venue. No doubt about it. See our Swell & Consistency Chart for Sumatra for a run down of what you're likely to experience. Obviously the main season is the best time to come, but the camp is fully operational in the off season too.

Winds

Winds are "supposedly" the killer of the off season. Its simply not true. Admittedly they're not always ideal like in the main surfing season - and can be variable and often onshore for many spots (from the west) on many days. But at Karang  its one of the few waves that can handle a south westerly wind no problem (at Karang it'll be cross- off shore) and remember that the winds are usually light (or non existent) every morning anyway!

Reef

The wave breaks on coral reef and therefore reef boots (and helmets) are recommended - although many riders choose not to wear them. Sea urchins are quite scarce and so walking out to the surf (barefooted) isn't so bad. If you come in on a slightly fuller tide, you can belly into the shore as well. However, the outside section is nearly always relatively shallow - and the reef in this spot (ironically) is the sharpest. Like most reefs in Indonesia, Karang has had its fair share of victims on its reef (particularly at low tide as this is when its at its shallowest). So remember, if you take care through this section you'll usually be ok!

Crowds

The main season has the most consistently good waves - its nearly always going to be perfect - so this is the busiest time of year. However, even if there's 20 guys at the camp - usually small groups of people surf at different times - so crowds aren't usually an issue whatsoever. Bare in mind, that the area offers many other empty waves to surf that are very close by and easily accessible. In the off-season the waves are very rarely crowded.

Karang Nyimbor - Southern Breaks

Step out of your accommodation at Karang Nyimbor, and straight onto one of Sumatra's most consistent breaks. Otherwise, for a change take a short drive to many other great waves along the Sumatran coast.

The main waves are:

Karang Nyimbor

Karang Nyimbor

Step out of bed, onto the beach and straight out onto this long left hander. One of the best and most consistent waves in the whole of south Sumatra, if not in Indonesia.

Way Jambu

Way Jambu

Way Jambu or Sumatran pipeline as its also known is one of the most perfect waves around - but for experienced riders only.  it's just 15 minutes from Karang Nyimbor.

Mindiri

Mandiri

This quality beach break in the realms of any french beach break is a 20 minute drive from Karang Nyimbor.

Osamas

Bali Village

On its day this left and right breaking wave is a must visit again just 20 mins from Karang Nyimbor.

Krui Left & Right.

A quality bowly left hander that needs a bit of swell to start to work, Krui Left is just 40 mins Karang Nyimbor.

Meanwhile, nearby Krui Right is a superb right hander, one of the best in the area but needs a bit of swell to start to work.

While at Krui, you can also catch a boat to Banana Island (see breaks out of Jenny's).

Misquitos / The Peak

A heavy peak that offers a short but perfect barrel 40 mins from Karang Nyimbor.

Jenny's Right

Jenny's Right This idyllic right hander is the ideal surf spot - to surf with just you and your mates.

Breaking for approximately 100 meters, this right breaking wave offers a bit of everthing - from decent barrel sections to big open faces. Unlike Karang Nyimbor, this waves entry (although steep) is relatively easy. Once on the wave various sections are on offer - depending on the size of swell and its direction. The end section will always closeout - and can be pretty shallow.

Swell, Winds & consistency

This wave breaks year round, but is offshore more in the off season. It faces more south east, but still recieves a large amount of swell - as most swells are from the south or south west. So if you're staying at Karang Nyimbor and it goes onshore, then jump in a car and stay here for a day. There's other world class waves in the area too. See our swell and consistency chart for a run down of what you're likely to experience. You'll be missing out if you dont visit this area when you stay at Karang Nyimbor.

Reef

The wave breaks on coral reef and therefore reef boots (and helmets) are recommended. Getting out to the lineup is quite straight forward - you just have to time your entry. Coming in can be slightly trickier on a lower tide as it can get quite shallow.

Crowds

Jenny's is a quiet experience and although there's local people around, there's no local surfers.
